Exhibition History

This is a comprehensive and searchable listing of exhibitions held at The Cleveland Museum of Art from the Inaugural Loan Exhibition of 1916 through 2007. Museum archives staff maintain and update the database. It includes exhibitions planned by CMA staff, traveling exhibitions initiated by other museums and CMA, and exhibitions planned by the education department and held in gallery space devoted primarily to educational purposes. It does not, however, include exhibitions planned for and circulated in local schools and libraries by the museum's extensions department, unless they were also shown at the museum.

This list was compiled from information about exhibitions that appeared in various museum publications, websites, invitations, press releases, posters, internal memoranda, brochures, and miscellaneous fliers housed in the CMA archives. Its accuracy and completeness is therefore dependent on the quality of information provided by those sources. Exact start and ending dates were particularly difficult to determine for exhibitions held between the years 1929 and 1958. When an exact date is not known, a partial date is listed.

Information included in the Exhibition Database:

• Exhibition Title
• Start and End dates (where available)
• Availibility of archival records for the exhibition, and if so the box and folder numbers for the records in the collection "Exhibition Compendium"
• Availibility of a published catalogue or guide to the exhibition, and if so a link to the item in the Ingalls Library catalog
• Link to the museum's special exhibition website, where available (1996-present)
• Gallery(s) where exhibition was installed, where available
• Availibility of gallery installation views, and if so the box and folder numbers for the photographs in the collection "Registrar's Office: Photographs" [if there is a "P" in front of the box/folder numbers, these images are from the "Archives Photograph Collection"]
