Series Descriptions

Series 1: Views View Box List

Extent: 8 boxes, 2.6 cu.ft.
Arrangement: Varies by subseries

The Views series has been further divided into five subseries. The first is exterior views. These are arranged chronologically, then by direction of the view. This subseries also contains all Fine Arts Garden photographs. The second subseries is interiors. This includes photos of galleries and other spaces not included in the Registrar's Collection. They are arranged numerically for numbered galleries, then alphabetically for named spaces. The third subseries is construction photos documenting the 1958, 1971 and 1984 additions and gallery renovations; they are arranged chronologically. The fourth subseries is exhibition photographs. These photos document exhibitions not found in the Registrar's Collection; it includes additional photos for those exhibitions in the Registrar's collection. The fifth subseries is non-CMA views. These images are any views not of the museum. They are predominantly Cleveland views.

Series 2: Departments View Box List

Arrangement: By subseries

The Departments series organizes departmental photographs by originating department. There are currently five subseries: Extensions, Conservation, Education, Marketing and Communications, and Events. The Extensions subseries contains photographs of Extensions Department exhibitions at the following locations: Beck Center, Cleveland Public Library, Karamu House, and Lakewood. The photos are arranged alphabetically by exhibit title. The Conservation subseries includes photographs of conservators performing treatments, conservation staff, and conservation equipment. The Education subseries is the largest of the subseries at 4 boxes. It consists mostly of photos of young people's classes, although there is documentation of some adult classes and Teachers Resource Center workshops. The bulk of the photos are arranged chronologically into two groups, pre and post 1950's, and by location of the class. There are also many photographs of Advanced Placement Art History classes in the museum and a large group of snapshots from children's classes in the early to mid 1980s. The Marketing and Communications subseries documents advertising efforts and includes photographs of banners and filming projects in the museum. It is arranged somewhat chronologically. The Events subseries documents non-CMA staff events at the museum. These include performances, receptions, conferences, and other special events. They are arranged alphabetically by the name of the event.

Series 3: Protraits View Box List

Arrangement: By subseries, then alphabetical

The Portraits series includes three subseries: individual portraits, group photos, and groups of CMA staff. Most photographs are of staff, trustees, donors, visiting lecturers, organists and other performers. In the individual portraits subseries files for the museum directors include the director's family and group photographs. The people in the photographs in the groups subseries may or may not be directly related to the museum. The CMA staff groups subseries includes small groups of staff and all staff events. Not all individuals in group photographs are identified.

Series 4: Oversize/Glass Plate Negatives View Box List

Arrangement: By subseries

The "Oversize/Glass Plate Negatives" series consists of two subseries: oversize photographs and glass plate negatives. The oversize photographs consist primarily of portraits, though there are some interior and exterior views and education photographs. The glass plate negatives include both portraits and views.
