Newly arrived in the reference collection is this large tan volume by F. Turner Reuter. With over two thousand biographies and over eight hundred pages, Animal & Sporting Artists in America is a formidable addition to the biographical dictionaries in the collection. To be considered for the volume, artists must have been born prior to 1936, with the earliest entries dating as far back as the sixteenth century. In addition to the entries, the volume is indexed, for artists and titles, and richly illustrated in both black and white and color. An extensive bibliography follows as well. It is a remarkable volume in that it illuminates little known artists by focusing on the subject of their work, and re-contextualizes well known painters within a specific style. While one might not consider William Merritt Chase or Thomas Eakins as sporting artists, here their work is evaluated in a new light. And the result is fascinating.
