A Book By Its Cover: Moby Dick; or, The Whale

The great white whale surfaces in this edition of our ongoing series, A Book By Its Cover. This, the most famous of books about whales and whaling, is striking in black buckram and silver. The whale's teeth menace as the creature breaks the surf, into what appears to be a starry clear night sky. The spine, not pictured here, features the tail, beneath the title of the tale.  Rockwell Kent illustrated two versions of the famous novel, a three volume set, and a trade edition, of which this is the latter. One can almost picture the white whale in the museum's painting by the artist, Maine Coast.
