An exhibition catalogue from 1879 listed this drawing as once belonging to the Narcisse Revil collection (Paris 1879, no. 367), a mistake that has been repeated in the subsequent literature . As late as 1991 (Berlin et al. 1991, 70), it was thought to be possibly owned by Revil, sold on 24 February 1845, in lot 48. However, the description of lot 48 is too vague to be conclusive. In 1970, Louise Richards noted that this sheet matched the description of lot 53 (from the Ignace-Joseph de Claussin collection) in a 1844 sales catalogue, yet the name Claussin had been omitted from li

Medium: oil on fabric
Measurements: Unframed: 46.3cm x 38.3cm
Date: c. 1865

 Provenance
Paris sale, Drouot, 6 April 1882 (lot 82), La petite laitière, 46 x 37 cm. By 1982, Consul Eduard Friedrich Weber, Hamburg. (In Exposition Th. Ribot, exh. cat. Paris [1892], Weber is listed as the owner of a painting with the title and size that match the cma picture. It seems awkward, however, that the painting was in a Hamburg collection and was subsequently sold again at the estate sale of Ribot's widow in 1896, where the cma painting is reproduced. Yet Weber had a large collection of Old Master and modern paintings, many of which he sold at auction in 1887, and no Ribot paintings are listed in the 1907 catalogue of his nineteenth-century paintings. It is therefore possible that Weber sold this work privately and that it was eventually added to the estate sale in 1896.)
